【英語学習】「There is/are」「～がある」の意味と使い方

今回は、「There is/are」について説明します。
「～がある」を表現する際に使用する「There is/are」ですが、
中学英語で習う範囲ではありながらも使いこなせていない人も少なくないでしょう
　
ということで意味と使い方について書いていこうと思います。

◆「There is/are」とは

「There is/are」とは「～がある」を意味します。、
例えば、「リンゴがあります。」だったり「ネコがいる」など実体のあるものから、
「問題がある」、「解決策がある」など実体のないものまで使用できます。

文にするとこんな感じです。

「There is/are ○○○」の○○○部分には、文の主語となるモノ・人、場所などの名詞が入ります

「There is」と「There are」の使い分けは、○○○にあたる部分が、単数か複数かで決まります。

◆「There is/are」の肯定文

「～がある」「～がいる」を表現する肯定文についてです。

「～がある」、「～がいる」の「～」にあたる部分が、上記の名詞の位置にきます。
名詞が単数、もしくは不可算名詞であればbe動詞は「is」、複数であれば「are」となります。
※be動詞の「am」は使わないので、「There am ○○○」とはなりません。

こんな感じ
・There is an apple in the basket. (カゴの中にリンゴがあります。)
・There are two apples in the basket. (カゴの中にリンゴが２つあります。)
・There is something to read. (何か読むものがあります)

◆「There is/are」の否定文

「～がありません」「～がいません」を表現する否定文についてです。

肯定文 : There is a station. (駅があります。)
否定文 : There is not a station. (駅がありません。)

肯定文 : There are some books on the desk. (机の上に何冊か本がある)
否定文 : There are not any books on the desk. (机の上には本が(一冊)もありません)

◆「There is/are」の疑問文

「～がありますか？」「～がいますか？」を表現する肯定文についてです。

肯定文と同じく、名詞が可算名詞の単数、不加算名詞であれば「Is there」、
加算名詞の複数であれば「Are there」となります。

Is there a book on the desk？ (机の上に本が一冊ありますか？) ・・・ a book は単数
Are there two books on the desk？ (机の上に本が二冊ありますか？) ・・・ two books は複数
Are there any books on the desk？ (机の上に本がありますか？) ・・・ any books は複数

◆例文

・There is a painting on the wall.(壁に絵があります)
・There is a book on the desk. (机の上に本があります。
・There are some pens in the box. （箱の中に何本かのペンがあります）
・There are too many people. (人が多すぎます)
・There are not many traffic lights. (信号機の数が少ない)
・There is not a book on the desk. (机の上に本がありません)
・Are there any trees in the garden？ (庭には木が(何本か)ありますか？)
・Is there a restaurant near here？ (この近くにレストランはありますか？)
・How many people are there in the room？ (部屋には何人いますか？)
・How many days are there in a year？ (一年は何日ですか？)
