海外ドラマは英語の練習に良いなんていうのがよく言われたりしますが、
その中でも代表的なものがアメリカのコメディドラマである「フレンズ」です
主にリスニングの練習で海外ドラマが用いられたりしますが、リーディングや言い回しの学習にも効果的であるため、本記事では「フレンズ」の会話シーン(英文/和訳)を紹介していきたいと思います
「フレンズ」シーズン1のエピソード1,2の中から、いくつか紹介します
◆モニカの惚気話を聞くレイチェル(1話)
【レイチェル】
You look like you slept with a hanger in your mouth.
口にハンガー入れて寝た？
(ニヤついているモニカに対しての一言)
【モニカ】
He’s just so…
You remember you and Tony Demarco?
It’s like that with feelings.
ポールってとても… 前に付き合ってたトニー覚えてる？似た感じよ
【レイチェル】
Oh, wow, are you in trouble..
ひどい目に遭うわよ
【モニカ】
I am just going to get up,
got to work and not think about him all day.
Or else I’m just going to get up and go to work.
話は終わり。仕事に行って彼のことは考えないわ。やっぱ考える
◆ロスがレイチェルにデートに誘いたい意向を伝えるシーン(1話)
【ロス】
You probably didn’t know this,
but back in high school, I had a major crush on you.
初耳だろうけど高校時代、君が好きだった
「back in ～」は「～にさかのぼって / ～に戻って」
「have a crush on ～」は「～のことを気に入っている / ～のことが好き」という意味になります
【レイチェル】
I knew.
知ってる
【ロス】
You did?
I always figured you just thought I was Monica’s geeky older brother.
そっか、変な兄貴だと思ってた？
【レイチェル】
I did.
思ってた
【ロス】
Listen, do you think,
and try not to let my intense vulnerability become any kind of a factor here.
But do you think it would be okay if I asked you out sometime maybe?
質問だ。僕は繊細だけど、気にせず答えて。いつか君を誘っていい？
「intense」は「激しい」、「非常に強い」
「vulnerability」は「脆弱性」、「脆さ」という意味になりますので、
「try not to let my intense vulnerability become any kind of a factor here」は
「僕の極度な脆さを要因（答えに対する）にしないようにして」という意味合いになります
【レイチェル】
Yeah, maybe.
いいわ。多分
【ロス】
Okay, maybe I will.
わかった。多分誘うよ
◆男女関係の考え方についての全員でのやりとり(2話)
【モニカ】
What you guys don’t understand is for us,
kissing is as important as any part of it.
女にとってキスは大切な行為なのよ
【ジョーイ】
Yeah , right. You serious?
あっそ、 まじで？
【レイチェル】
Everything you need to know is in that first kiss.
女にとってキスは大切な行為なのよ
【モニカ】
Absolutely.
その通り
【チャンドラー】
I think for us kissing is pretty much like an opening act, you know?
It’s like the stand up comedian
you have to sit through before Pink Floyd comes in.
男にとってはライブの前座だ。ピンクフロイドの前に出るお笑い芸人って感じ
【ロス】
Yeah, and It’s not that we don’t like the comedian.
It’s just that that’s not why we bought the ticket.
お笑いも好きだけど、それを目的にチケットは買わない
【チャンドラー】
The problem is, though after the concert’s over
no matter how great the show was
you girls are always looking for the comedian again.
I mean we’re in the car. Fighting traffic. Basically, just trying to stay awake.
困るのは大盛況でライブが終わった後、女はまた笑いを求める。
帰りの運転で男は眠気をこらえるのに必死だ
【レイチェル】
Yeah, well, word of advice. Bring back the comedian.
Otherwise, next time you’re going to find yourself
sitting at home listening to that album alone.

◆それぞれの親のことについて会話するシーン(2話)
【ジョーイ】
Folks are really that bad, huh?
ヒドイ親なの？(モニカに対しての質問)
「folks」は「親」を意味します
【ロス】
Well, you know, these people are pros.
They know what they’re doing.
They take their time. They get the job done.
二人は親のプロだ。立ち回り方を心得てる。娘いびりが得意技だ
(両親は時間をかけてモニカいびりを遂行するプロ のような意味となります)
【モニカ】
I know they say that you can’t change your parents.
Boy, if you could, I’d want yours.
もし親が変えられるなら、兄さんの親と変えたいわ
(両親はロス(兄)に対しては優しいため)
【フィービー】
It’s even worse when you’re twins.
双子は辛いわ
(自分の話をするフィービー)
【レイチェル】
You’re a twin?
双子なの？
【フィービー】
Yeah, we don’t speak.
She’s like this high-powered, driven, career type.
姉貴とは口もきかない。バリバリのキャリア女よ
「high-powered」は「強力な、活動的な、非常に有能な」を
「driven」は「 衝動や感情に突き動かされた、身をゆだねた」を
「career」は「キャリア、経歴」を意味します
【チャンドラー】
What does she do?
仕事は？
【フィービー】
She’s a waitress.
ウェイトレス
【レイチェル】
All right, you guys, I kind of gotta clean up now.
ハイ皆、お店の掃除するから帰って
【モニカ】
Chandler, you’re an only child, right?
You don’t have any of this.
チャンドラーは一人っ子でいいわね
【チャンドラー】
Well, no, although I did have an imaginary friend
who my parents actually preferred.
でも俺には空想の友達がいてね、両親はそいつを気に入ってたよ
